HAVERTOWN — Mark Michel of Havertown said for him, photography is something he′s done for about 25 years since high school, just shooting here and there.

"I do some shows here and there, but it′s not like I′m really well-known," Michel said. "It′s more of an advocation than a vocation."

His star has risen a little higher now, because his photo of a young girl and a dog playing fetch near a sunset-touched pond was the first-place entry in the Punxsy Weather Discovery Center′s summer photo contest.

Michel said he took the photo — shown at right here — about four or five years ago at an informal event near Richmond, Va.

The girl in the photo is named Abigail.

"They were playing fetch near the pond, and she would throw the stick, and he would run after it all day," Michel said. "I watched them, and they were having so much fun. I waited until sunset and just snapped it."

Michel said he has visited friends in the Punxsutawney area several times, but not recently.

"I′m a little out of practice," he said. "But I love the area. It′s beautiful."

In fact, it was one of Michel′s friends in Punxsutawney who suggested that he enter a photo in the Weather Discovery Center′s contest.

The second-place winner in the summer photo contest was Mandy Keith of Punxsutawney; the third-place winner was George Ecelbarger; and receiving an honorable mention was Courtney Braunns of Mahffey.
